I don’t often leave the North Island, but I’m excited to explore the stunning photography opportunities that await me in the picturesque landscapes of the South Island when I do.
Marlborough and Tasman Regions
Marlborough, one of my favourite regions to visit, isn’t just loved for its wine. Located in the northeast of the South Island, it features stunning vineyards, especially in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys, along with the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, offering many photo-worthy spots to explore.
Warm beaches abound along the coastline, while the top of the Southern Alps boasts the Nelson Lakes inland.

East Coast
The eastern side boasts Canterbury Plains, featuring vast stretches of flat, fertile land. Further north lies Kaikoura, renowned for its rocky shores teeming with diverse marine life, perfect for whale watching and seal encounters. Nearby, Banks Peninsula boasts stunning coastal scenery and charming towns like Oamaru, famous for its historic buildings. I have also found the fascinating Moeraki Boulders, scattered along the beach like giant marbles.

Southern Alps and the West Coast
The Southern Alps majestically rise, their snow-capped peaks providing a playground for photographers like me to capture their beauty. They also serve as the backdrop for many photos in the South Island, dominating the landscape. Along the West Coast, you’ll find rugged coastline, rainforests, and glaciers.

Central Otago
Renowned for its distinctive landscapes, Central Otago boasts arid, rocky terrain, and dramatic gorges. This region is famous for its vineyards, orchards, and gold mining history, all of which I enjoy. Tranquil lakes mirror surrounding peaks, casting ethereal reflections that captivate the soul. From serene Lake Tekapo to pristine Lake Wanaka, each body of water invites me to capture its essence through the lens.
